Week 5: Atomic Habits for Leaders

Podcast: Maxwell Leadership Podcast
Episode: “Atomic Habits with James Clear

Description: James Clear explains the science of habit formation and why small consistent actions lead to remarkable results.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Instead of asking “What do you want to achieve?”, James Clear recommends asking “Who do you want to become?” Share with the group: Who do you want to become (be specific and concrete - no vague ideals or spiritual cliches).
  2. Since starting Clear's book, which "atomic habit" have you actually started practicing in your own life? If you haven't begun a new habit, why not?
  3. When you look at your life today, what are your various "spaces" (physical environment, emotional climate, social settings, etc) designed to encourage?
  4. Conversely, what do your spaces discourage (good or bad)?
  5. James Clear talks about systems vs goals - that focusing on your system (your routines and processes) is more effective than just setting goals. What one system (routing, process, structure) could you put in place right now to support the person you're becoming?
