What Is Baptism?

For followers of Jesus, there are many moments in life where we can look back and mark the work that he’s done. For many of us, one of those first moments was baptism. It’s a moment that signifies you have chosen to leave behind your old self, and be refreshed as a new creation in Jesus Christ.

Why should I be baptized? The answer is simple; because Jesus commanded us to! To understand more about baptism, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with Romans 6:1-4:

As you can see, baptism is a public declaration of your love for Jesus and signifies that you have died to your old self and sin, emerging as a new creation. If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you should follow in his steps and be baptized regardless of age.

Jesus himself was baptised and then commands us to do the same. In Matthew 3:13-17, we read the story of Jesus coming to be baptized.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Though Jesus had lived a sinless and righteous life, he was baptized as a humble example that we should follow, to “fulfill all righteousness.” He was honoring his Father in heaven who he loved.

Whether you were baptized as a baby, or you’ve never taken the step before, prayerfully consider taking the step to outwardly declare your faith. Your baptism is your public statement of following Jesus and should not be taken lightly. It should be a moment for you to reflect on all Jesus has done in your life, transforming you into a new creation.
