The Word of God

The Apostles' Teaching

Are you finding ways to actively grow in your faith? If you have been following Jesus for any amount of time, you know that growth is a never-ending process. Every day of our lives, we should strive to become more like Jesus. In this series, we’ll cover six areas that can help you grow in your faith and become a fruitful follower of Christ.

  • The Word Of God
  • Fellowship
  • The Lord’s Supper (Communion)
  • Prayer
  • Godly Stewardship
  • Praising God

While all are important, we’ll start this week with the Word of God. It’s important to be in the Word daily. Unlike any other book we could read, the Bible allows us to know more of God’s character, teaches us and is the truth of our lives. After all. Proverbs 30:5 says :

“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”

If you find yourself struggling to get into the habit of quiet time with God’s Word, here are a few things you can do.

1. Pray

In 1 John 5:14, it says “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” So before you begin your daily Bible reading, pray. Ask the Lord to give you a hunger for his Word and to reveal things to you through your reading. It will help you focus on your quiet time with Him.

2. Read With Others

Keep yourself accountable and read God’s Word with others. This could be a small group or simply a family devotional. This allows you to read, reflect and discuss how the passage is applicable in your life.

3. Find A Bible Study

If you’re the kind of person that needs a plan, like myself, it might be good to find a Bible study to help guide you. There are studies available by topic or by date range. A great place to start is with a Bible In A Year reading plan. Or, if you’d rather use a more guided tool, RightNow Media has several bible studies available.

4. Pick A Memory Verse

You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can invest yourself into your quiet time by picking verses to memorize. It will help to guide your focus throughout the day. Start with one or two of your favorite verses and pray for God to reveal what he’d like you to learn next.

5. Focus On The Word Throughout The Day

Most of us hit the ground running in the morning, but God’s Word is always available to us. Take some time throughout the day to focus on the Word. Whether it's through a memory verse or taking some time to reflect on what you’ve been reading during your lunch break. Joshua 1:8 says:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” As you dive deeper into the Bible, it will start to transform your life!
