What made it feel so purposeful?<\/li>\n<li>Read Ecclesiastes 1:1-18. How does the author of this book describe all that he has seen in his lifetime?<\/li>\n<li>Read Genesis 1:26-27. What stands out to you in this passage? How does this affect your purpose in life?<br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>26 Then God said, \u201cLet us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.\u201d<\/em><em>27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GM76f6SiaWw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch the video above then discuss as a group:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4. Can you share both a time when life seemed like a random series of events and a time when it seemed like there was an intentional plan unfolding?<\/p>\n<p>5. Coming back to Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, what does the author say is the wisdom that he has found?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>6. In what ways might someone\u2019s view of eternity affect their sense of meaning and purpose?\u00a0If you believe we all have a purpose, what role does God play in that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When life seems to make little sense, it\u2019s easy to fall prey to the \u201cIt\u2019s meaningless!\u201d trap. Indeed, the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes is built around these very words. In stark contrast stands the book of Job, in which the lead character exclaims, \u201cThough [God] slay me, yet I will hope in him\u201d (Job 13:15). In other words, hard experiences in life can jade us to any sense of purpose. Rather than looking at life through the lens of our experience, another option is to look for some sense of truth outside ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus states in Matthew 7:7, \u201cAsk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.\u201d Discovering our purpose is one of the most important endeavors in life.
