Day 16 – Jeremiah 18:1-6

READ

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as it seemed best to him.

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me. 6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.

REFLECT

First, Jeremiah obeyed the Lord, without question or complaint. Then, through his obedience, God revealed an incredible truth. Jeremiah watched as the potter was able to rework uncooperative clay into a new pot. In the same way, God can transform our stubborn hearts for good. Like the clay, we may object or purposely fail to fall in line with God's higher ways. Still, because of our Savior's unending grace, we are never irredeemable.

PRAY

God, thank you for loving me even when I fail to love you wholeheartedly or to love my neighbor as myself. In you alone, I have found mercy and hope. I give my life, my heart, my will – all that makes up my meager bunch of clay – to you. Let your Spirit begin to speak to me even now. I have ears ready to hear and eyes open to see. Amen.
