READ
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
REFLECT
A weighed-down, depressed Elijah encountered God not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. After the storms, Elijah heard from the Lord in a still, small whisper. While our instinct may be to look for God in mighty miracles or emotional highs, God speaks in a hushed tone too. In the midst of chaos and seemingly endless wilderness, we need to turn up the volume on God’s Word. In the storm, we need to incline our ears to his voice, for it's there that the enemy loves to shout.
RESPOND
God, you have come through for me in the fires, the earthquakes, and the winds. I have felt your care in the wilderness, for you concern yourself with the well-being of every single lost soul. Whether I am entering or exiting a storm, or stuck in its torment now, I incline my ear to you, Lord. I draw closer, knowing you are near. Amen.
