Session 7: Can I Know God Personally?

Watch the video above then discuss as a group:

1. Is it surprising that 75 percent of adults desire a close relationship with God? Why or why not?

2. Why might someone resist knowing God personally?

3. Read John 1:9-14. What does it mean to be a child of God?

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Watch the video above then discuss as a group:

4. How might you develop a personal relationship with God?

5. Read Romans 10:9-10. In your own words, explain what this verse means.

9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

6. Where do you stand with your relationship with God? Is there anything holding you back in accepting Jesus Christ as your savior and placing your faith in Him?

The relational nature of humans points to the creator’s desire to be in relationship with us. Yet most people recognize a flaw, some sense of brokenness in our relationship with God. “The problem is not that we’re bad; it’s that we’re dead!” one speaker noted. So what gives? Scripture describes a God who passionately pursues the people he created and makes it possible to fix our broken relationship.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

In what ways are you craving a relationship with your creator? What steps will you take to develop that relationship?
